What is Venturi meter?

A Venturi meter is a device used to measure the flow rate of a fluid (liquid or gas) through a pipe. It operates based on the principle of the Venturi effect, which states that as a fluid flows through a constricted section of a pipe, its velocity increases while its pressure decreases. The Venturi meter takes advantage of this principle to accurately determine the flow rate of the fluid.

The basic components of a Venturi meter 

  • Inlet Section: The fluid enters the Venturi meter through a wider section of the pipe called the inlet. The diameter of the inlet is larger than that of the throat.
  • Converging Section: As the fluid moves through the Venturi meter, it passes through a gradually narrowing section called the converging section. This causes the fluid’s velocity to increase and its pressure to decrease.
  • Throat Section: The narrowest point of the Venturi meter is called the throat. It has the smallest diameter and the highest velocity of the fluid.
  • Diverging Section: After passing through the throat, the fluid enters a diverging section where the pipe widens again. In some Venturi meters, this section is followed by a recovery cone that helps restore some of the pressure lost in the converging section.

The Venturi meter works by measuring the pressure difference between the inlet and the throat sections. The pressure difference is directly proportional to the square of the fluid’s velocity. By measuring this pressure difference and knowing the properties of the fluid, the flow rate can be calculated using Bernoulli’s equation or other flow equations.
