What is Hypsometer?

A hypsometer is a scientific instrument used to measure the height or altitude of an object or location above a reference point, typically above sea level. 

It is commonly used in various fields such as geography, geology, forestry, and surveying to determine elevation and topographic features.

Types of hypsometer : There are different types of hypsometers, each with its own specific design and application. Some common types include:

  • Mercury Barometric Hypsometer: This type of hypsometer uses a mercury barometer to measure atmospheric pressure at a given location. By comparing the atmospheric pressure at the measurement site with the known pressure at sea level, the instrument can calculate the altitude of the location.
  • Boiling Point Hypsometer: A boiling point hypsometer measures the boiling point of a liquid (typically water) at the location’s atmospheric pressure. As the atmospheric pressure decreases with increasing altitude, the boiling point of the liquid also decreases. By measuring the boiling point and comparing it to the known boiling point at a specific elevation, the hypsometer can determine the altitude.
  • Aneroid Barometric Hypsometer: This type of hypsometer uses an aneroid barometer, which is a barometer without liquid. It measures changes in atmospheric pressure and calculates altitude based on those changes.
  • Electronic Hypsometer: Modern hypsometers may use electronic sensors, such as pressure sensors or GPS, to measure altitude more accurately and efficiently.
